A radial basis function network classifier to maximise leave-one-out mutual information

چکیده
We develop an orthogonal forward selection (OFS) approach to construct radial basis function (RBF) network classifiers for two-class problems. Our approach integrates several concepts in probabilistic modelling, including cross validation, mutual information and Bayesian hyperparameter fitting. At each stage of the OFS procedure, one model term is selected by maximising the leave-one-out mutual information (LOOMI) between the classifier’s predicted class labels and the true class labels. We derive the formula of LOOMI within the OFS framework so that the LOOMI can be evaluated efficiently for model term selection. Furthermore, a Bayesian procedure of hyperparameter fitting is also integrated into the each stage of the OFS to infer the l2-norm based local regularisation parameter from the data. Since each rthogonal forward selection adial basis function classifier forward stage is effectively fitting of a one-variable model, this task is very fast. The classifier construction procedure is automatically terminated without the need of using additional stopping criterion to yield very sparse RBF classifiers with excellent classification generalisation performance, which is particular useful for the noisy data sets with highly overlapping class distribution. A number of benchmark examples are employed to demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed approach. © 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Training Radial Basis Function Neural Network using Stochastic Fractal Search Algorithm to Classify Sonar Dataset
Radial Basis Function Neural Networks (RBF NNs) are one of the most applicable NNs in the classification of real targets. Despite the use of recursive methods and gradient descent for training RBF NNs, classification improper accuracy, failing to local minimum and low-convergence speed are defects of this type of network. In order to overcome these defects, heuristic and meta-heuristic algorith...
متن کاملComparing Two Methods of Neural Networks to Evaluate Dead Oil Viscosity
Reservoir characterization and asset management require comprehensive information about formation fluids. In fact, it is not possible to find accurate solutions to many petroleum engineering problems without having accurate pressure-volume-temperature (PVT) data. Traditionally, fluid information has been obtained by capturing samples and then by measuring the PVT properties in a laboratory. In ...

متن کاملAdvanced Feature Selection Methodology for Automatic Target Recognition
This paper investigates independent feature selection as used in neural networks for solving classification problems. Radial basis functions and wavelet transforms are used to preprocess the input data. A class of nonorthogonal classifiers is defined and their properties are investigated. It is demonstrated that nonorthogonal classifiers perform better than the orthogonal ones. Feature selectio...
متن کاملNonlinear Feature Transforms Using Maximum Mutual Information
Finding the right features is an essential part of a pattern recognition system. This can be accomplished either by selection or by a transform from a larger number of “raw” features. In this work we learn non-linear dimension reducing discriminative transforms that are implemented as neural networks, either as radial basis function networks or as multilayer perceptrons. As the criterion, we us...
